ABOUT US

Introduction

Our History

Wild Fig Books and Coffee was founded by Kentucky writer Crystal Wilkinson and her partner Ronald Davis in the Meadowthorpe area of Lexington before closing there in 2015. They reopened later that year in a renovated turn-of-the-century house on North Limestone. It was and remains the only black-owned bookstore in Kentucky.

In 2018, Crystal and Ron announced that they would be closing the store due to financial difficulties. However, the community so had come to love the space stepped up to save it. The bookstore was sold to a quickly formed “Wild Fig Cooperative” in 2018 and is a safe, sacred space within the walls of the bookstore that carries a legacy of an inclusive, grounding space where community members find their voice and collective vision. We have a variety of offerings, from co-working space to food specials, open mic nights, poetry readings, Drag Queen Storytimes, small concerts, and, of course, books!
